11 Famous Wrestling "Holy Grounds" That Still Stand
1. Madison Square Garden
"Madison Square Garden isn't a church, but it's holy ground."
With that quote from Survivor Series 1996, Bret Hart not only inspired this article, but cemented Madison Square Garden as wrestling's holy ground. Synonymous with WWE and arguably all of combat sports, this arena has housed some of the most historic moments in wrestling history.
Before WWE went national, it was the home of Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, and Bob Backlund–who all sold out the garden numerous times against a wide array of opponents. It was where Hulkamania began, and when WWE's mindset changed under the guidance of new owner Vincent K. McMahon. With his ambitions high: McMahon used MSG to host a fabulous supercard full of A-list celebrities, calling it WrestleMania.
The garden has hosted everything from WrestleMania, to top-grossing SummerSlams, to historic RAW moments such as when Steve Austin first gave a stunner to Vince McMahon.
Nowadays, the Garden, with its expensive live television contract, is only used by WWE for house shows, but even today, it's still held up by the company as the crown jewel–the Mecca–of their entire business.
We can't say we blame them.
