11 Famous Wrestling "Holy Grounds" That Still Stand
3. Greensboro Coliseum
This past November, WWE decided to do something special with their SmackDown house show in Greensboro, North Carolina. As it was the site of the original Starrcade events, the company brought back the name numerous NWA legends including the Rock 'n Roll Express, Ricky Steamboat, Arn Anderson, and Ric Flair, and paid tribute to them and the others who made the Greensboro Coliseum the MSG of the southeast.
One of the bigger venues for the Mid-Atlantic wrestling territory, the Coliseum was the breeding ground of some of southern wrestling's biggest feuds from Rhodes vs. Flair, to Piper vs. Valentine, to the Rock 'n Roll vs. Midnight Express. This was the site of collar matches, I Quit matches, steel cages, street fights, blood, guts, and everything else that made the southern territories grittier and more tantalizing than what was being offered in the northeast.
With the death of Jim Crockett Promotions, the Coliseum has been quieter with wrestling in recent decades. But with the return of Starrcade as a special WWE house show, there has been renewed interest, with WWE announcing it would return to Greensboro as an annual show. We can only hope this will pave the way for a new legacy.
