Dave Meltzer, wrestling match rating overlord, gave the main event of Clash of the Champions IX the full five stars. The match in question was Ric Flair taking on Terry Funk in an 'I Quit' match, and this is as good as you're going to get in a match with such a stipulation. No forks, no cars, just wrestling, blood and guts.

The story of the match is Funk beating the ever-loving tar out of Naitch, but Flair just won't quit. Funk's verbal assault is on point too, reminding Flair of broken necks and consistently offering Flair a way out. It isn't happening though, and Flair turns the tables on Funk. The finish is beautiful as well, with Flair getting Funk to utter those words whilst trapped in the Figure-Four Leglock.

Not only is the match itself an absolute must-see, the booking surrounding the post-match antics was great. Funk's manager Gary Hart turned on his charge, which led to The Great Muta coming out and attacking Flair and Funk. Sting would make the save, ultimately leading to the Sting/Flair alliance which would eventually lead to Sting's first World Championship.

As good as wrestling got in 1989.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
