It was reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that current IMPACT Champion Johnny Impact and current ROH Champion Jay Lethal agreed to a future match while aboard the Jericho Cruise. Meltzer further stated that the two companies had previously discussed such a bout for some time but no agreement had been officially reached.

If the match does take place, it will be an interesting turn in the progression of a working relationship between the two promotions. Each company has achieved moderate success separately but both have become a bit stagnant over the years. ROH has been heavily relying on their partnership with NJPW for some time, while IMPACT has taken major steps toward improving their image in 2018 but their ratings on Pop TV have continued to fall to an all-time low.

With the major Madison Square Garden show on the horizon, perhaps IMPACT could secure a spot for their champion in the historic arena. Perhaps the proposed champion against champion bout could even happen there. Regardless of where or when it happens, it’s hard to find a downside for such a high-profile match and working arrangement between America’s top independent promotions.
