2. The Mountie - Intercontinental Championship (1992)
Back in 1992, title changes at house shows were not
completely uncommon, considering that there still was only the Big Four PPVs that
year. (By 1995, that number ballooned to 10.)
Still, when the Mountie squared off against Bret Hart just two days before the 1992 Royal Rumble, fans in Springfield, Mass. couldn’t have been expecting what they saw. The Mountie, a lower midcard villain, captured the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Bret “The Hitman” Hart. On paper, it was an upset of epic proportions.
There have been plenty of reasons – both real and storyline – given for the surprise change, but Mountie’s success was short-lived. Two days later, he fell to “Rowdy” Roddy Piper at the Rumble, giving Hot Rod his one and only singles title in WWF/E.
