When Monday Night Raw was just getting started out, the program needed something of a jolt, a reason for fans to tune in. A surprise title change would do the trick nicely.

And that’s exactly what we got in 1993 when Marty Jannetty returned to WWF to challenge former Rockers teammate Shawn Michaels for his Intercontinental Championship. Jannetty would win the title in a shocker, making Raw a program where you felt that “anything can happen.”

Less than three weeks later, however, Michaels would regain his IC title at a house show in Albany, NY, ending Marty’s brush with greatness. The Heartbreak Kid would hold the title for a few months before being suspended and stripped of the title, which would in turn set in motion events that led to the famous IC title ladder match at WrestleMania X between Michaels and Razor Ramon.
