11 Things We Learned From Breezango On Talk Is Jericho
9. Fandango’s First Gimmick
Don’t worry, Fandango didn’t spend the entire podcast throwing others under the bus. He wasn’t afraid to poke fun at himself for his own misfortunes, as he proved when he shared the details of his very first gimmick in the wrestling business—that of the Portuguese Sun Dragon.
Fandango was saddled with the ridiculous moniker in the late ‘90s whilst wrestling for Yankee Pro Wrestling—now known as Top Rope Promotions—in New Bedford and Fall River, MA. According to the man himself, those two areas have a large Portuguese contingent, and with the promoters looking to establish a new top babyface, what better way to appeal to their masses than with the Portuguese Sun Dragon spiel?
Granted, there may have been better alternatives, but Wikipedia confirms that the Providence-New-Bedford-Fall River metropolitan area has by far and away the largest Portuguese-American community in the whole of the United States. So, as silly as the theory might have sounded, it may actually have been a pretty solid one.
