11 Things WWE Got Wrong At SummerSlam 2017

7. An Extremely Cold Opening

Baron Corbin John Cena

I don’t think many people will complain about John Cena defeating Baron Corbin. The Lone Wolf is clearly being punished for something, be it his Twitter escapades or a number of poor matches. Corbin has had subpar with pay-per-view matches with elite wrestlers like Shinsuke Nakamura and Sami Zayn - he clearly isn’t ready for this spot.

WWE didn’t get the result wrong, but why was this chosen as opening match of the pay-per-view proper? By the time these two did battle the crowd were in the building, would it not have made sense to start off with something a little, well, better?

This was an utterly forgettable nothing match. It was dominated by Cena, with Corbin reduced to shouting at the crowd and next to no offence. This was the opposite of what a show opener should be.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
