Being a British WWE fan is often a heartbreaking endeavour.

Staying up all night to watch frequently disappointing pay-per-views is a regular occurrence, but ahead of the 2017 Royal Rumble, there was a certain sense of true optimism. There was no clear winner, and Roman Reigns’ position in the WWE Universal Championship match meant that there was little chance of LOL ROMAN WINS being the outcome.

Many fans (myself included) believed that Samoa Joe was all set to make his debut in the Royal Rumble match, and the anticipation was feverish to say the least. 29 men entered the match leaving one last entrant, and as the clock ran down from 10 fans moved to the edge of their seats. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

And out strode Roman Reigns. It was a slap in the face, further proof where proof wasn’t needed that Roman Reigns is the only WWE superstar that truly matters. Roman’s entry into the Royal Rumble was an insult to the intelligence of fans worldwide.

Were we supposed to believe that the powers-that-be only had 29 men booked for their annual 30-man extravaganza? If Reigns had won the WWE Universal Championship match, who would have been the 30th entrant? If Reigns had to negotiate his way into the match, how in the blue hell was he able to negotiate himself into the final position?

His arrival took all of the wind out of the match, and what could have been a thrilling Royal Rumble finale became an exercise in international annoyance.
