11 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About WrestleMania

3. WrestleMania 7 Was Supposed To Be Outdoors

The WrestleMania 7 event show in Los Angeles was built on American traitor Sgt. Slaughter defending the WWE Title against Hulk Hogan. The event was supposed to take place at the Los Angeles Coliseum, which is an outdoor stadium that held the 1984 Summer Olympics and the Los Angeles Raiders also played their NFL games as well. On the True Story of WrestleMania DVD that WWE released a few years back, Vince McMahon confirmed that. Others also spoke about how the plan was to hold the event at the LA Coliseum and there were even advertising photos shown proving that claim to be true. Due to the heat that Slaughter had as an Iraqi sympathizer, WWE claims that there were security issues. The Gulf War was going so maybe somebody might try something stupid. Of course, WWE created the character and did the angle to make money off the real life event, but then they claimed to be worried about security. It wouldn't be an issue if they never did the angle, right? The story goes that they had about 17,000 tickets sold when they decided to move the event to the LA Sports Arena, which held about 17,000 people. Compare that to what WrestleMania is like now. They usually sell around 55,000 seats several months in advance and then sell more tickets closer to the event. It didn't seem likely that they could come close to the selling out the LA Coliseum because the product wasn't as hot in 1991. Was it really security reasons that they moved it to the LA Sports Arena, or was it because they knew they couldn't sell enough tickets? It was probably a little of both.
