11 Things You Didn't Know About Diamond Dallas Page
6. His WWE Regret
It wasn’t just WCW fans who didn’t like how DDP was used in WWE, Page himself wishes things had gone differently. He was infamously booked as a stalker who was obsessed with The Undertaker’s wife, but it was a terrible fit for both men. By the time the Invasion angle ended, Page jobbed to The Big Show in a 30 second match on SmackDown, and had to put over The Undertaker’s wife. It should have gone much better, and he had a plan for how he wanted it to play out.
Page was “The People’s Champion” before The Rock was. Both men wore the moniker during the boom period of the late '90s, which meant a feud between them would have been an easy sell. When DDP met with Vince McMahon after WCW went under, he laid out his grand vision for his debut. The Rock would be on TV, and the lights would suddenly go out for an uncomfortable amount of time. The announcers would wonder if they were having technical difficulties.
Suddenly, a voice would question who is the real people’s champ, and then when the lights came back on, DDP would be in the middle of the ring. Page vs. Rock would then begin. Vince apparently liked the idea, but loved the stalker angle. He thought the feud with Taker would make Page a monster heel.
DDP came to regret not just shaking Vince’s hand, wishing him well and then telling him to call him when he was ready to do the Rock angle. Considering the company later brought in Steiner, Flair, Goldberg, Hall, Nash and Hogan, it’s likely that Vince would have agreed to the feud eventually. If only.
