11 Ups & 10 Downs For Impact Wrestling In 2020
4. Revamping The Draw
Coming into 2020, Sami Callihan was still the Impact World Champion, and was thriving in a rivalry with Tessa Blanchard as the pair headlined the Hard To Kill pay-per-view. Dropping the title to Tessa came at a right moment for 'The Draw' as he needed something new to come out of the history-making Blanchard rivalry, and that was apparently a hacker character.
In fairness, this new persona was fine. Not knowing when Sami was going to pop up next was exactly the thing you should be seeing from Sami Callihan. Departing oVe at Rebellion during his Ken Shamrock cinematic encounter was the icing on the cake for both Callihan and Madman Fulton as it led them both into entertaining scenarios. A brief spot in the World Tag Team Championships picture alongside Shamrock at Slammiversary made for a fun match vs. The North, and then, things became abysmal.
Going from World Champion to hacking into Katie Forbes' photoshoot unveiling was a drastically terrible move for Sami. He hasn't quite been able to fully recover from the rivalry either, which is a weird thing to say about something who main evented a big event challenging for the World Championship in November. He's now reignited his rivalry with Eddie Edwards, which feels as if it's nothing more than an excuse to place Sami on the card. There was no need for it.
Callihan vs. Edwards on the 5 January 2021 Impact Wrestling is billed as their final match together. It needs to be. There's not a single reason as to why it would need to continue any longer. We'll never be able to relive the glory of the pair's original rivalry.
