Better known to the modern day fan as a pretty poor colour commentator, in his wrestling heyday Taz was an absolute destroyer who dominated the ECW ranks like few other wrestlers in the company's history.

His UFC-like gimmick was not the one that he had come onto the scene with though, as he initially started in ECW as the Tazmaniac. Yes, it was pretty much what you would think, only with a few more suplexes thrown into the mix.

It was during this period that Taz suffered the neck injury that would put him on the shelf and eventually lead to the birth of the gimmick he became famous for.

During a tag match (with Taz teaming with Eddie Guerrero) against Dean Malenko and 2 Cold Scorpio, Taz was placed in position for a spike piledriver. Scorpio came off the rope to drive his head into the canvas, but Taz was not properly protected.

The impact broke his neck and - as legend has it - Taz only found out about the extent of the damage after walking himself to hospital, where he was told he shouldn't even be able to stand up.
