11 Wrestling Easter Eggs You Totally Didn't Notice
7. Chris Jericho Drops A Certain Name
On the December 4 2019 Dynamite, Chris Jericho revealed his 'Lexicon of Le Champion'.
It was an inspired bit designed to put across the idea that he was sh*t-scared of fighting Jon Moxley and build towards a mini-programme with Jungle Boy. Listing the talent he refused to wrestle in his last contracted match of the year, he also used the bit to mock Cody because he couldn't challenge for his World Title. He also berated the crowd ("the chubby guy eating popcorn in the fifth row"), dropped insider references ("Allen Jones") and delighted in silly wordplay ("Hangman Page, Diamond Dallas Page, Paige").
Lastly, Jericho trailed off at the mention of the name "Marty..."
Only, he didn't trail off when interrupted by the Jurassic Express theme. For the purposes of the development and his organic reaction to it, he made it sound like he did, as if he was going to say "Marty Jannetty" to continue his irreverent riffing.
But watch closer. Jericho specifically waited for the sting of the theme to hit before saying Marty. It was his cue to say it, and he said it to reward the hardcores paying strictest attention.
The "Marty" in question was Marty Scurll, whom AEW - reportedly, though they vary - had hoped to install as Dark Order leader two weeks later.
It didn't happen. He signed for ROH.
Probably for the best.
