6. Ricochet - Lucha Underground

As Ricochet vaulted out of the ring and landed softly on his feet in front of an amazed Velveteen Dream, an entire army of wrestling fans drew breath. Was WWE going to make Ricochet the megastar he could and should be? An incredible talent, the former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship had something that the WWE sorely needed; the ability to wow younger members of the audience. With the right booking and the right support, Ricochet could have become the superhero that Vince McMahon's flagging promotion was desperately searching for.

Then he was moved to the main roster and beaten regularly, given the occasional win and mini-push before being ruined for eternity in the sands of Saudi Arabia. Thanks for coming, Trev.

Truth be told, Ricochet follows Gran Metalik in the annals of can't miss talents that have never really been given the correct support. NJPW never seemed eager to pull the trigger on the man despite his obvious talents, and it wasn't until he was leaving that PWG put its world title on him. Enter Lucha Underground.

In that fabled Boyle Heights warehouse, Ricochet was Prince Puma, a masked warrior with Konnan by his side who conquered all in front of him. Prince Puma was the first-ever Lucha Underground Champion, carrying the title throughout the season before losing it to Mil Muertes. He was portrayed as a megastar throughout, one of the top performers on the show and given a blank slate on which to perform his craft.

Sure, it all went awry in the end, but no promotion on the planet has done a better job with Ricochet than much-missed Lucha Underground.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
