7. John Morrison - Lucha Underground

All hail Johnny Mundo! John Morrison and Lucha Underground was a match made in heaven, or more accurately a match made in a warehouse in an undisclosed location in Boyle Heights. The AAA-affiliated show introduced a whole heap of luchadores to the English-language wrestling world, but one of its greatest success stories was a former WWE star who had been on TV for more than a decade at that point.

Billed as Johnny Mundo, the multi-time WWE Intercontinental Champion was one of the top babyfaces for much of the first season of the show, having thrilling matches with Prince Puma, Mil Muertes and King Cuerno before turning heel against Alberto El Patron. This heel turn proved to be the catalyst for the best run of John Hennigan's career, allowing the Shaman of Sexy to indulge his showmanship side and become the thrilling arrogant prick that he always threatened to be.

Mundo was a revelation from that point on. Along with an ever-changing band of dorks, Mundo continued having great matches and backed it all up with his best character work to that point. Fans wondered why this version of Hennigan hadn't been seen on WWE TV, although his heel-centric status since returning has given that audience fresh hope.

Until then, we'll always have 'Welcome to Slamtown'.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
