With WWE Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin and WCW World Heavyweight Champion Booker T leading sides into battle, titles were largely secondary on the first big clash between Vince McMahon's superstars and the collected insurgents from the WCW/ECW Alliance.

Alongside the mammoth five-on-five 'Inaugural Brawl' that saw Austin swerve turn on his colleagues to join up with the McMahon children and Paul Heyman, the show presented nine additional matches with representatives of the rival organisations squaring off.

The pick of the bunch was a match between Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy that resulted in Van Dam taking Hardy's Hardcore Title after a breathless stunt show. Though working as a heel and representing the villainous Alliance, RVD was cheered vociferously for his innovative high flying offence and would eventual come to be a lone babyface amongst his sneering colleagues all under Stone Cold Steve Austin's malevolent rulership.

Regardless of the flawed implementation of the angle, fan curiosity to see the ultimate inter-promotional clash was evident when the show drew a whopping 770,000 buys, dwarfing every non-WrestleMania pay-per-view number and ousting numerous editions of the 'Showcase of the Immortals' itself.
