As noted, Hirooki Goto defeated Taichi at Power Struggle to once again become the NEVER Champion. During the final night of World Tag League action, however, the four-time title holder had to defend his bout against the always exciting Kota Ibushi.

Interestingly, the Golden Star spent most of 2018 fighting alongside Kenny Omega rather than pursuing singles gold of his own. That changed on 9 December, when Kota managed to capture the NEVER belt. Goto tried his best to fend off the unorthodox Ibushi, but the Golden Star's high-impact and high-flying style proved too much.

Following Kota’s win, the new number contender Will Ospreay made his way to the ring and officially challenged for the belt at Wrestle Kingdom. The two shook hands in a sign of respect and to solidify the highly anticipated match. Just one week later, the two would meet again to offer fans a preview of what can be expected on 4 January.
