12 Definitive WWE Attitude Era Matches

2. The Undertaker vs. Mankind - King Of The Ring 1998

There is no match in WWE history more violent and brutal than the Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind at King of the Ring 1998. It was a match that was meant to conclude the latest chapter in their historic rivalry but, instead, it lived in infamy for the chaos that reigned and the sacrifice of Mick Foley for the purposes of entertainment. From the moment the Superstars climbed the cell, beginning the match on top of the structure rather than inside it, there was a feeling of real danger that existed. By the time Foley was sent flying off the top of the cage and through the announce table below, fans realized that the Undertaker character may be one of supernatural ability but a horror story was unfolding before their very eyes. The chokeslam through the roof of the cell, leaving Foley's body a mangled mess on the mat below, was sickening and the chokeslam onto thousands of thumbtacks was a fitting conclusion to the most gut-wrenching match of all-time. There was no joy to be found in the Hell in a Cell match between the Phenom and his greatest rival yet, it was the perfect example of what helped make the Attitude Era so popular. It was wild, chaotic, unpredictable and vivid. There was unadulterated violence and two all-time great competitors breaking their bodies for the cheers of a rabid audience. It was, strangely and sickeningly enough, beautiful.
