7. Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart - Survivor Series 1997
The Attitude Era as we know it today may never have happened had it not been for the most infamous screwjob in wrestling history. The Montreal Screwjob not only led to Bret Hart's departure from WWE and the solidification of Shawn Michaels as the most controversial star of his era, it also gave birth to the Mr. McMahon character that would become the heel around whom the entire show was built. The main event of the 1997 Survivor Series was an exercise in pure hatred and ego as the two biggest stars of 1990s WWE clashed for the right to call themselves the top dog in the sport. Unfortunately, what was a hard-hitting and intense match was overshadowed by the events that unfolded late. In front of his fellow countrymen and millions watching around the world, Hart was robbed of his championship by an egotistical boss whose goal it was to ensure that his top prize did not end up on WCW television when The Hitman made the jump. It was a disgusting look at what depths a promoter will take to prove who the man with the most power really is and, more importantly, one that instantly earned McMahon the scorn of fans. The once-beloved commentator was now the evil, megalomaniacal owner who did whatever it took to guarantee the outcome of any match was exactly what he wanted for his company. It was absolutely integral to the Attitude Era and the future of the company.
