12 Most Famous WWE Matches Ever

2. Shawn Michaels Vs. Bret Hart - Survivor Series 1997

You could mention this match as "The Screwjob" or simply "Montreal" and any wrestling fan would know what you were talking about. When Bret Hart defended the WWE Title against Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series in Montreal, history was made when something happened that will likely never be duplicated again. Going into the match, most fans knew that Bret Hart had already signed a contract with rival World Championship Wrestling and was heading there soon. What we didn't know was how they would get the WWE Title off him. As most of fans know by now, Hart's relationship was tumultuous at beast with Michaels in 1997 and he didn't want to put Michaels over in Montreal because Michaels had said he would never put Hart over. A scripted rivalry became very personal. As the match progressed, Michaels applied Hart's own Sharpshooter on him very briefly and referee Earl Hebner called for the bell while WWE's Chairman Vince McMahon was heard saying "ring the f**king bell." It was the most surreal ending to a match in WWE history. We're used to "screwjobs" within the confines of a storyline, but this one seemed real. That's because it was. Every wrestling fan has an opinion about this one. There are some that feel, to this day, that it was all some elaborate work by McMahon, Hart and Michaels to make WWE into a bigger company while setting off McMahon's run as arguably the best heel in the history of the business. All of that stuff happened organically, but there will always be fans that feel like it was some elaborate plan. The feelings between Hart and WWE were so bad that it took him over 12 years to return to WWE in an on camera role although he did appear in the 2006 WWE Hall of Fame before that. It's nice that Hart was able to bury the hatchet with Michaels, but it's hard to forget their most famous match ever even if it wasn't their best one.
