12 Most Famous WWE Matches Ever

1. Hulk Hogan Vs. Andre The Giant At WrestleMania 3

"I never thought it could be done, Gorilla." - Jesse Ventura on commentary. Hulk Hogan was the WWE Champion that was by far the most popular guy in the business. It wasn't even close. Hogan at his peak was one of the most well known people in the world thanks to his run in WWE and also his role in the Rock 3 feature film. They did all they could to build him up to be the face of WWE. It worked. Andre the Giant was one of the most famous wrestlers ever because there was nobody else like him. Standing at 7'5" and weighing about 500 pounds (Hogan often says he was more than that of course), Andre rarely lost matches. There was something special about the guy. When he turned heel with his manager Bobby Heenan to set up this match with Hogan at WrestleMania 3, it was huge for WWE because they found the best rival for Hogan. This wasn't just any match either. They decided to hold it in front of a reported 93,000 fans at the Silverdome in Detroit. That attendance number may not be true, but even if that's the case it was still one of the largest crowds in WWE history. Was the match any good? Not really. Hogan was not known for having great matches and Andre was barely mobile at this point in his life. There were a lot of punches, kicks, headbutts and basic holds to pass the time. What people remember most is the finish of the match. Hogan got the momentum towards the end of the match and was able to knock Andre down. When Hogan picked up Andre for the bodyslam heard round the world the Silverdome erupted. People didn't do that to Andre normally, but Hogan did. Hogan hit the leg drop, covered and retained his WWE Title in front of a rabid crowd that couldn't believe what they just saw. Ask anybody in your life if they know that Hulk Hogan slammed Andre the Giant. Chances are they do. This match transcended the wrestling business. It became an iconic sports moment because they did something that they really couldn't duplicate. It was a special moment and the most famous match in WWE history.
