11. CM Punk's Second Issue Of Drax Is Out

...and it's not half bad, if you weren't reading Lobo comics back in the nineties. Co-written with Cullen Bunn of The Sixth Gun and Deadpool fame, the story sees the Guardians Of The Galaxy taking some down time and Drax The Destroyer, left directionless, deciding to default to seeking out and murdering his perennial nemesis Thanos. That's issue one, in a nutshell. Issue two has him facing off against a resurrected former herald of Galactus, the cosmically powered, world-breaking Terrax... in a drinking contest. Terrax has become a pacifist through a kind of grumpy boredom, and the pair of them get involved in shenanigans together on a Wild West style alien planet, involving kidnapped children and a mysterious bartender. Now, I was reading Lobo comics in the nineties, and this is all very Giffen, Grant & Bisley, only missing most of the cheerfully black comedy. You'd think that Punk, an edgy kinda guy, would have infused it with a little more oomph: but the humour, the backdrop, the characters, the storyline, even the supposedly explosive havoc€ it€™s the PG version of Lobo, a kids cartoon in comic book form. I like their interpretation of Terrax as the extraterrestrial conqueror version of a maudlin drunken uncle at Christmas... but you still get the impression that this is the low fat version of the story, with a director's cut with added mayhem still lurking in the minds of both writers. Shame really. The project I'm really looking forward to is Punk€™s first real acting gig, on the no doubt straight-to-VOD Hellstorm, a post-apocalyptic zombie flick co-starring a certain Mrs. AJ Brooks. Apparently she€™s been learning to use a sword in preparation, and he plays secondary antagonist to her secondary protagonist. After seeing Punk€™s surprisingly nuanced turn as a grumpier version of himself on Marc Maron€™s show on IFC, I actually have a little faith that he could acquit himself well in a movie. Apparently he might fight for UFC one day, too. Let€™s see if he can debut before he hits forty and turns back into a pumpkin.
