Following a loss to Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes was fired, retaliation for criticisms of the way Triple H and Stephanie McMahon were doing business. A week later, Rhodes' brother Goldust was thrust into a match with Orton with the opportunity to win back Cody's job. He failed and was dismissed himself. Dusty Rhodes, their father and legendary star in the professional wrestling industry, was assaulted by Big Show on orders of the Authority. Finally, it was decided that all three Rhodes family members' employment with WWE would be on the line as Goldust and Cody took on Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins of The Shield at October's Battleground pay-per-view. The Rhodes family hit the ring to a great ovation and rallied together moments before the most important match of Cody and Goldust's careers. They were hyped and the crowd was completely behind them thanks to the nature of the story. Reigns and Rollins, two-thirds of the most dominant faction in WWE history, arrived for the match as focused as ever and the result was a tremendous tag team bout that would end up being one of the finalists for the WWE's Slammy Awards. Reigns and Rollins took turns isolating Goldust and Rhodes but the heart and determination of the babyfaces would not be denied. With Dusty on the outside to prevent any interference from United States champion and third Shield member Dean Ambrose, Cody and Goldust were able to overcome the sheer talent of their opponents with the latter taking out Reigns at ringside, leaving Cody to deliver Cross Rhodes to Rollins for the win. The emotional moment after the match, where a father embraced his two sons while tears streamed down their faces, is exactly what makes the business as great as it has been, is and will always be.
