2. The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family - Elimination Chamber 2014

Sometimes a match becomes most anticipated of the year because of the talent involved. That was the case this past February when The Shield and the Wyatt Family met at Elimination Chamber in a war between the two most dominant trios in World Wrestling Entertainment. Chants of "this is awesome," rang throughout the Target Center in Minneapolis before the bell even rang. The build to the match had been spectacular, with the Wyatts and the Shield staring each other down but never making physical contact until the Monday Night Raw before the show. The company built such a story and was able to create such a sense of excitement around the match that it became far more interesting than the main event, WWE title match that would come later in the evening. Intensity reigned supreme as one could tell just how energized the competitors themselves were for the bout. Early, the bout resembled a run-of-the-mill six-man tag. The Shield assumed the role of babyfaces and the Wyatts isolated Dean Ambrose to keep up with the tried and true tag team formula. Then Ambrose made the hot tag to Seth Rollins and the pace of the match quickened. The former Ring of Honor star stood out, taking incredible risks and landing on his feet more times than not. Eventually, though, he found himself the victim of a beatdown at the hands of his opponents. The hot tag to Reigns moments later is what ignited the chaotic conclusion to the match. Ambrose and Bray Wyatt fought away from ringside and into the crowd. Erick Rowan and Luke Harper put Rollins through the Spanish announce table, then the trio turned its attention toward Reigns. The second-generation star delivered a valiant effort but the numbers game caught up to him and Wyatt scored the win for his team following Sister Abigail. The storytelling in the second-half of the match was superb. For a year, The Shield had scored countless victories by working as a team and picking their opponents apart, isolating them from one another and allowing the numbers game to work in their advantage. On that fateful night in February, they had that formula turned on them by the Wyatt Family and they felt the sting of defeat as a result. A great match that exceeded lofty expectations and is still the front-runner in the Match of the Year race for 2014.
