11. The Gimmick Battle Royal - WrestleMania X7
The buildup to WrestleMania X7, one of the greatest shows in WWE history, took a very serious tone with blood feuds like Vince vs. Shane McMahon and Undertaker vs. Triple H, plus a heated rivalry over the WWF Championship between the two biggest stars in the company, Steve Austin and The Rock. The show needed a little levity. Along comes the Gimmick Battle Royal, which simultaneously paid homage and poked fun at some of the more colorful WWF gimmicks of the past. Adding to the fun was the fact that the WWF had just purchased WCW, which gave them access to some of their talent, including Mean Gene Okerlund and Bobby The Brain Heenan, who called the match. WWE plays the nostalgia card all the time now, but few remember that back in 2001, the WWF wasnt really about honoring the past. If anything, they were about putting it down, as that was how WCW stacked its main events. At the time, the Gimmick Battle Royal was a serious breath of fresh air.
