11. No Holds Barred: The Match/The Movie (1989)

So back in the day, Hulk Hogan fancied himself as a bit of an actor. In the '90s, he starred in prestige Oscar bait such as Suburban Commando and Assault on Devil’s Island, but in the late '80s, he had to start from scratch. He and Vince McMahon executive produced an avant garde independent piece called No Holds Barred - a brutal commentary on the nature of fame and competition.

Shockingly, the critics tore it asunder (they just didn’t get it), and while the film broke even for McMahon, who financed it, he decided to squeeze as much money out of it as he could.

Thus, not only was the SummerSlam main event a tag match featuring the film’s villain Zeus (as in, the actor was wrestling as the character), but in December, the WWF offered the entire No Holds Barred film on PPV, with an added bonus of Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake against Randy Savage and Zeus in a cage match. What a deal!

This PPV is one of few that’s not available on the WWE Network. Moreover, they wouldn’t again try the concept of basing a PPV around a movie starring a superstar. Which is a shame, because to promote The Marine 5, WWE could have easily put the Miz, Maryse, Heath Slater, Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel, and Naomi in a giant mixed tag match with a bunch of jobbers dressed as gangsters. It would have been the top draw of the year!
