5. Changing The Direction Of WWE For His Wife's Political Dreams
This isn't going to be one of those "PG ERA SUX ATTITUDE ERA RULZ" rants, because those are tired and played out. You have to look at things for how they are, though, and the fact that Vince McMahon drastically changed the direction of his company because his wife was running for political office in their home state of Connecticut blows the minds of many a wrestling fan. Because of the wild debauchery that the WWF and WWE had often put on television, the McMahons knew that Linda's political opponents would use her family's time in wrestling against her. How could she be effective in office when the WWF has degraded women for years? How could anyone take her seriously when wrestlers have died under her husband's watch? Sure, she had absolutely nothing to do with any of that, but that doesn't stop politicians from being politicians. We got more of a family-friendly product, with a big focus on children. Push the kid-friendly wrestlers, play up the charity work that gears towards the younger audience, etc. It helped to get them more sponsors, who weren't afraid of having to pull their sponsorships because of racy programming anymore. Those extra sponsors, and the money they brought, meant that WWE was going to stick with the PG product, even after Linda McMahon lost her bids for office, and here we are today, wondering when the next big shift in direction will take place.
