12 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About The Royal Rumble

2. Vince McMahon Torn Quads In 2005 During The Unplanned Batista/Cena Tie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoBpVPNcm8s The 2005 Royal Rumble ended with a battle between John Cena and Batista. They were two superstars that were set to become huge main event players at the same time, so it was fitting that they ended the match. Batista went to give Cena a Powerbomb, which led to Cena going towards the ropes and they both ended up tumbling over the top to the floor. They landed at around the same time or at least close enough to the same time that it was deemed a tie. We later learned by people involved with WWE at the time that Batista was supposed to hold onto the top rope, but he wasn€™t able to. Due to the tie finish hat wasn't planned, they must have improvised with referees pointing at each guy as the winner. Ref Jack Doan first pointed at Batista, but then the others pointed to Cena. They were probably told in their earpieces to make it a tie. That led to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon marching down to the ring. Vince was angry as he threw down his jacket to the ground and ran into the ring. He messed up, though. Instead of a smooth slide into the ring, he hit his leg against the side of the ring so that when he tried to stand up he just collapsed to the mat. It looked bad. It was an awkward scene as Vince sat up against the ropes with the refs talking to him. If it was a planned segment he probably would have had a microphone, but he didn't. The ring announcer Howard Finkel was informed that the match was going to be restarted. Batista quickly got the win just like he was supposed to.
After the show, it was revealed that Vince tore his quad muscle when he ran into the ring. When he tried to stand up, he collapsed back down. When he got backstage he also tore his other quad because he was trying to hide it from people, so when he favored his leg too much he ended up collapsing. Vince would later have surgeries on both quads although he returned to television again and had several matches as well. It was a moment that WWE wants us to forget because you will probably never see them reference it or show a replay. Vince had no problem humiliating himself during his career, but this wasn't a moment that he wants to be remembered for.
