Goldberg's push had hit its absolute zenith in the summer of 1998. He rode a historic winning streak into the main even of WCW, becoming one of their biggest homegrown talents. The bookers may have botched Sting's takedown of the villainous NWO, but they would get it right handing it to Goldberg.

Goldberg may have been from Oklahoma, but he played both college and professional football in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. He had that hometown energy following him into the ring. The crowd sang that elongated "Goooooldberg" chant all through the match, visually shaking the formerly impenetrable force that was Hulk Hogan.

The match may not have been long but it seemingly took forever to anyone sitting in the dome that night. When Goldberg finally hit the spear, toilet paper was already flying into the ring like streamers at an indie show. With the ecstasy in the crowd that night, especially after seeing the symbol of wrestling's old guard getting downed, a message was communicated to the viewing audience that it was now time time for the next generation to take up the reigns.

To the dismay of many fans, WCW would eventually drop the ball on Goldberg's reign, shocking him with a cattle prod at Starcade so Kevin Nash could win the belt, and hand it over to Hogan.
