Shifting gears, Scott Hall is lucky to be alive due to his own self-destructive behaviour. During one road trip earlier in his career, he was handed pain pills by Curt Hennig, and the lack of pain proved to be addicting for the wrestler. Appearing on Steve Austin's podcast, Hall said that he didn't wish to blame Hennig for introducing him to the pills, but he couldn't deny that's what happened. Worse yet, Hall was told - by Hennig and others - that washing them down with a few beers would help even more. Initially not a big drinker, this changed Hall's mindset entirely. Suddenly, alcohol became a way of self-medicating. There are conflicting reports here, because Scott has previously stated that he used booze to cover over problems related to a shooting in the early-1980's. Working as a night club bouncer, Hall wrestled a gun from an attacker and ended up shooting him in self defence. This spiraled the man into depression, and he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope. Up until DDP made an intervention into Hall's life several years ago, it was out of control. Scott himself says he would likely be dead if it weren't for his friend's help.
