12 Wrestlers Who Hung On Way Too Long

9. Sting

If we never see Sting in the ring again, sadly our last memory of him well be watching him get Buckle Bombed into the corner, and nearly collapsing. No 56-year-old should be asked to main-event a pay-per-view in a one-on-one match like that. By the time WCW went out of business, Sting was already in his early 40s. There would have been no shame in calling it a career at that point. He€™d made enough money, and taken enough bumps to have earned his retirement. However, he kept on in TNA. It was a nice gesture to help out his old friend Jeff Jarrett, and ideally, he could have helped build some younger talent. That didn't really happen. He was still positioned as more important, and physically superior to nearly everyone else on the roster through his entire run. Year after year he thought of retiring, then year after year Dixie Carter would offer him a healthy, mid-six figure salary to stay on-board, while only showing up for TV and pay-per-views. Near his mid-50s, time finally caught up to him. He was noticeably slower, began wearing a shirt to cover up his physique, and sometimes wouldn€™t even sit while delivering his trademark Scorpion Death Lock. When He Should Have Hung Up The Tights: It€™s hard to say with Sting exactly, as he was actually decent for most of the TNA run. Well, except that he seemed to be going through a mid-life wrestling crisis when he turned heel multiple times and evolved into The Joker. His run with the Main Event Mafia also showed some potential for a bit. A match putting over Samoa Joe or A.J. Styles around 2010, or a one-off against Undertaker in WWE would have been a perfect ending for The Icon.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
