Edge and Matt Hardy were once close friends. The two were part of the tag team resurgence of the early 2000s, and even though they were on the opposite sides of the resulting matches, a bond formed between the men. That friendship continued as both went on to become singles stars.

In 2005, Matt took all the photos of longtime-girlfriend Lita off his website, then cryptically blamed her and Edge for his behavior. Soon, the story got out that Edge and Lita had an affair, and WWE was so angry about the way Matt Hardy handled it publicly that he was the one they fired.

The fans were furious that Hardy was published, and Edge soon became one of the most hated heels in the company. Before long, WWE realized that it would be in their best interest to make this real-life feud a storyline. Hardy was rehired, and in a memorable segment, ran in and attacked Edge on Raw in a huge surprise.

The two began cutting shoot-style promos on each other, with Hardy detailing how his friend and girlfriend had broken his heart. They clashed at SummerSlam, with Edge destroying Hardy and winning via a quick stoppage, but the following month at Unforgiven, Hardy got revenge in a great cage match.

It was rumored that Hardy and Edge buried the hatchet enough to work together, but odds are that they weren't going out for beers after the shows.
