13 Classic Matches That Should Have Happened At WrestleMania

6. Shawn Michaels vs. Bret €œThe Hitman€ Hart II €“ WWF Championship €“ WrestleMania 13

A lot of wrestling fans know the story behind this one, but let€™s tell it anyway. Part of Bret Hart€™s agreement to drop the WWF Championship to Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 12 involved a promised rematch at WrestleMania 13. The Heartbreak Kid embarked on a tremendous run as WWF Champion while Bret€™s popularity came into question due to a changing climate in what fans wanted out of their professional wrestling. After regaining the WWF Championship from Sid at the 1997 Royal Rumble, HBK suffered a knee injury that required surgery. Shawn vacated the WWF Championship on Raw and told fans that he had €œlost his smile.€ Due to the timing of the injury and recovery time involved, Shawn would have to miss WrestleMania 13 as an in-ring competitor. He still showed up to join the commentary team for the main event between The Undertaker and Sid, but could not compete. Bret Hart has gone on record as saying that Shawn Michaels faked the injury because he did not want to lose the title to him at WrestleMania. HBK stands by the injury claim. When Shawn finally returned, the two feuded until Bret€™s unceremonious departure at the hands of Shawn at Survivor Series €™97.
