3. Shawn Michaels Wins The World Title

We’ve already touched upon one championship comeback in Survivor Series history; Bob Backlund’s WWF Title win 16 years after first capturing the belt. Now, Shawn Michaels didn’t have to wait quite so long for his world championship victory in 2002, but in many ways his win was even more memorable than Backlund’s in 1994.

Michaels had of course spent four years out of action after what appeared to be a career-ending back injury, sustained at the 1998 Royal Rumble. Somehow though, the Heartbreak Kid would make a sensational return in the summer of 2002, and he was arguably even better than before.

His first match back had been at SummerSlam of that year, in an unsanctioned Street Fight with Triple H, but come Survivor Series he had something bigger in mind; the World Heavyweight Championship.

Not only did he realise his dream of capturing the big gold belt that night, it also took place in the first-ever Elimination Chamber match, which undoubtably added to the spectacle of the win.

That closing shot of Michaels, belt on his shoulder, saluting the crowd was the perfect conclusion to the journey, the comeback and the match itself that sealed HBK’s return to superstardom. The less said about the haircut and attire though, the better…
