13 Things We Learned From New Day On Talk Is Jericho

7. Turning Heel

Kofi calls the heel turn gradual and says that most people were onboard for the first few months until they got to "the cool cities" like Philadelphia and Chicago and then people started to boo them and chant "New Day sucks", which led to the rest of the audiences wanting to follow suit. Jericho inquires how early in the gimmick's run they were told they would eventually turn heel. Xavier says they've probably never told anyone, but that while they didn't expect it to take long to turn, their boss didn't quite see it the same way. Kofi says the Raw after WrestleMania they were getting booed out of the building as babyfaces and pulled Vince aside to ask if they could pull the trigger on the turn. They reveal that in Vince's mind he was convinced the gimmick would be a huge babyface success and didn't understand why it wasn't working. This surprises Jericho who says he thought Vince knew it wouldn't work and was using it as a vehicle to turn them heel organically, and the three admit that unless he was working them that wasn't the case at all. Chris then compares it to Kurt Angle, who Vince thought would also get over as the squeaky clean good guy but the fans totally rejected it. This little tidbit of the interview reveals how out of touch Vince McMahon has grown because no one thought there was any mileage in the New Day as babyfaces from the moment they debuted the gimmick except for him apparently.
