13 Ups & 1 Down From AEW Dynamite (Jun 3)
Ups...
13. Black Glove Business
This week saw Tully Blanchard unleash a fierce Promo of the Year contender on Shawn Spears, tearing into his charge for screwing around, not taking his legacy seriously, and derailing his own career. It was an outstanding verbal volley from one of the baddest old men in the business and should really have been aired on television rather than social media.
A clip from it bled into last night's contribution, which featured Blanchard giving Spears a very specific gift in the back of a car. Tully claimed to have found the missing piece. Spears opened a box containing a simple black glove, then pulled it over his hand, which may seem inconsequential to those unfamiliar with booker Tony Khan's influences - but serves as a great call back for those who do.
Khan is a devotee of Bill Watts' Mid-South Wrestling. Ted DiBiase was one of that territory's biggest stars and would regularly use a loaded black glove to knock opponents out behind the referee's back, hinting at Spears' new direction. He's about to get meaner, nastier, and better, hopefully.
