13 Ups And 23 Downs For WWE In 2020

14. Rowan’s Pet

One of the stupidest storylines in recent memory did not start in 2020, but a good chunk of it played out during the year, so we’ve got to call it out here.

Shortly after being drafted to Raw in late 2019, Erick Rowan could have been booked as a monster heel. And indeed, he would pick up a bunch of squash wins. But it would be completely overshadowed by the fact Rowan carried a covered cage to the ring, presumably carrying a pet. Worse, Rowan would be shown backstage talking to the pet, sometimes from the viewpoint of the animal inside the cage.

The stupidity would continue with Rowan getting bitten several times by the creature, and it finally reached its peak (of stupidity) in March when Erick revealed that it was just a very fake-looking giant spider. Yep, four-plus months of TV time was dedicated to an ongoing angle that involved a Halloween novelty spider.

And finally, Drew McIntyre put the gimmick out of its misery by smashing the cage with the steel steps, squashing the stuffed arachnid. One month later, Rowan was released from WWE. But the stupidity remains in our memories.
