13 Ups And 23 Downs For WWE In 2020

19. Not Seeing Eye-To-Eye With This

Extreme Rules Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio Eye for an Eye

2020 brought us the advent of cinematic wrestling match, some of which was gold, some of which was so abysmal that they should be burned with fire and never seen again.

And then there’s the Eye-for-an-Eye Match between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio. The bout was exactly as described: Seth had punctured Rey’s eye on the steel steps, so it set up this PPV match where the winner needed to extract his opponent’s eye from its socket. That’s not a misprint or typo. If you just woke up from hibernation, this really happened.

Well, sort of. The match happened, and Rollins did win after shoving Mysterio’s face into the corner of the steel steps again. But we never really saw anything (despite rumors that WWE had brought in professional effects personnel for this stunt), and the match fell completely flat and was widely panned.

There’s an old adage about being careful to deliver what you promise, and WWE certainly didn’t do that here.
