I've been as guilty as anyone of fantasy booking Cody Rhodes into the main event, but recently events have conspired to change my mind. What events are those? Well. I wrote an article on Independence Day last year (not about the film. It was published on July 4th) offering a list of ten wrestlers who could be the next big thing in WWE, and placed Rhodes at number two. In that article, I suggested that Cody Runnels might not have long left in the Stardust gimmick, as the death of his father would cause WWE to insist that he revert back to a white meat babyface version of himself, the better to milk the real life tragedy for all they were worth. It transpired, however, that the Dream had been a particular fan of the Stardust gimmick, and his son felt it was a greater tribute to his father to continue with the character and the storylines presented to him. The other day, Runnels tweeted from his personal account to say that, in fact, WWE had no interest in bringing back the Cody Rhodes character. I loved Cody Rhodes... he was one of my favourite wrestlers, and probably will be again at some point. However, it seems that the man behind the Stardust face paint finds playing the character rewarding, and his fans should probably start respecting that, and stop tweeting Rhodes and Stardust (neither of whom will admit the existence of the other, because Runnels has old school written all the way through him like a stick of rock) demanding he abandon the gimmick.
