14 Things You Didn't Know About Axl Rotten

13. He Went To Catholic School

After moving out of his mother€™s house in Hyndman, Pennsylvania and into his father€™s place in Fell€™s Point, Maryland at the age of 11, Brian was enrolled into a local Catholic school. He was not a Catholic so struggled to accept the alien concepts suddenly being thrust upon him, so he rebelled against the system constantly. €œIn school we were each given a journal. The rule was that for twenty minutes each day we could write or draw in it whatever we wanted and the teachers wouldn't look. At the time we were completely obsessed with bands such as Judas Priest, Kiss and Iron Maiden, so we would draw little bands in front of elaborate stage sets. Of course, they all had huge pentagrams or something of that nature above the stage, and names like €œDevil€™s Son€, €œWildKatt€ and €œThe Sex Demons€. One day, my friend and I were drawing and passing our journals back and forth to compare our work and the teachers took them from us. Suffice to say, they were aghast to discover both journals were filled with graphic depictions of heavy metal hair bands and blasphemous Satanic imagery. €œWe had to have our parents come in and sit down for a conference, where the nuns expressed their concerns that we were having trouble accepting the Lord into our hearts and thus going down the wrong road where we were likely going to end up in jail. I said, €œWait a minute, you said we could put anything we wanted in these journals and you wouldn't look at them. You basically lied to us. What I understand here is that you teachers in this Catholic school want total control over everything, and that when you give us a small freedom you then take that away from us as well.€ I was expected to conform, but it was very difficult for me to do. The diligence - to put it one way - of the Catholic religion soured me on God for a few years after that. I believed in God, but I was angry with him for a long time.€
