14 Ups & 2 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Jul 9)
1. Everything Kevin Owens
The new Kevin Owens was comfortably the biggest highlight of last night's show, with the aggrieved former Universal Champion a man reborn as the fiery, p*ssed-off voice of the WWE Universe.
SmackDown's show-opening brawl was well-executed. Afterwards, we got a worked shoot promo that, for better or worse, is already drawing comparisons to CM Punk's pipebomb, as KO raged against the way Shane McMahon has presented himself since his family promised to put the power in the people's hands.
Claiming he was tired of being a company guy, he said all that's happened since the McMahons made their pledge is that Shane's TV time has increased. Nobody wants that, he claimed, and he feels sick whenever the former Commissioner calls himself 'Best in the World.' Shane arrived soon after. He called for Owens' mic to be cut several times but KO found new ways to get his point across, eventually grabbing an announcer's headset to rip on McMahon for taking TV time away from the likes of Apollo Crews, Buddy Murphy, and Asuka. Out came the security, and off went Owens through the crowd.
The cherry on top? Big Kev nailing Shane with a Stunner during the main event.
Sure, this is, at its core, another Shane McMahon storyline, but screw it. Kevin Owens killed it last night.
