8. Shawn Michaels Accidentally Helping Rival Bret Hart Win WWE Title (1997)
A lot of times we can look at a match that's great and appreciate the in ring action, but maybe we don't like the finish. Perhaps there was a ref bump or a weapon used that tainted it. We see those kinds of finishes all the time. Sometimes, though, they work perfectly. There's no better example of it than when The Undertaker defended the WWE Title against Bret Hart with Shawn Michaels as the referee. At the time of this match, Michaels was feuding with Hart. They actually got into a legitimate fight two months earlier backstage at Raw, but we didn't know that at home. We just knew they didn't like each other, so the story was how could Michaels call the match fairly? There was a stipulation that if Hart didn't win the match then he would never wrestle in America again. Michaels said that if he didn't ref the match fairly then he would also never wrestle in America again. With those stipulations in place, we figured Hart was winning. The question was how? That's where the memorable moment comes in. As a match it's pretty good and really long at 28 minutes, but if you've seen it you really remember the ending. They did a spot where Undertaker kicked Hart onto Michaels outside the ring. Hart used a chair to the head of Undertaker. Michaels looked like he hurt his knee. When Hart covered, Undertaker kicked out. After Michaels questioned Hart's use of a chair, Hart spit on him. Michaels tried to retaliate with a chair shot, but Hart ducked and Michaels walloped Undertaker in the head with the chair. It was one of the stiffest chair shots you're ever going to see. Hart covered for the win and the WWE Title. This set the wheels in motion for the heel turn of Michaels that led to the first Hell in a Cell match with Undertaker, which was their first feud. It also set up the famous match at Survivor Series 1997 with Hart taking on Michaels.
