It was originally a trademark of dastardly European types, including Fritz Von Erich, Baron Von Raschke and Killer Kowalski. Meng applied the claw to his opponents' fleshy underchins, and Mick Foley famously targeted the area under the tongue. The many versions of the hold have a startling variety of effects. An abdominal claw will make a guy howl in pain, sure, but the forehead version can apparently cause heads to explode and bleed everywhere. The mandible claw is supposedly a paralytic nerve hold, invented by pro wrestler and accused murderer Dr. Sam Sheppard. The Tongan Deathgrip, uh, chokes you, maybe? That one was never quite clear. The Claw hasn't really been seen since Lacey Von Erich vanished from TNA a few years back, which is super weird. Bray Wyatt is descended from a Blackjack and he's been wearing that weird half-glove for years now with no pay-off, so if he eventually starts killing people via face squeeze, you heard it here first.
