15 Craziest WWE House Show Incidents
3. Chris Jericho Is Suspended For Kicking Brazilian Flag
WWE suspended Chris Jericho for thirty days on May 25th 2012. He hadn't failed a wellness test or trashed a hotel room. No, Jericho's suspension was the direct result of in-ring actions, which is rarity in WWE. The suspension came following an incident at a house show in Säo Paolo, Brazil. Jericho was working the main event against CM Punk.
In an attempt to generate heel heat, Jericho kicked a Brazilian flag that had been thrown into the ring. It provoked the desired response but got Y2J a little bit too much heat backstage: officials were informed by local law enforcement that to publicly denigrate the country's flag was a criminal offence and that Jericho was in trouble.
While the match was in progress, Jericho was informed by the referee of what was going on. He had two choices: either apologise for kicking the flag, or go to jail. Sensibly, Jericho chose the former. Grabbing the house microphone, Jericho said sorry for kicking the flag and offending anyone. He called Brazil a beautiful country and said he and the WWE loved being there.
It was a bit of a kayfabe-killer, but it was necessary. Brazilian authorities were not fooling around and Jericho had to do what he had to do. WWE felt they had to suspend Jericho for thirty days, too.
