8. Regal Calls An Audible

Anyone who has heard any out-of-character interviews with Regal knows that he has a sharp sense of humour. Also, as an old pro, he knows when to improvise and mix it up when the situation calls for it. These two traits came together beautifully during a tag match on a March 13th 2005 house show from Dothan, Alabama.

The match, which opened the show, pitted Regal and Tajiri against the La Resistance tandem of Sylvain Grenier and Rob Conway. The crowd began chanting 'USA! USA! USA! USA!' about halfway through. That was funny, since Regal was British, Grenier was French-Canadian and Tajiri was Japanese. They must have been chanting for Rob Conway, then.

At least that's what Regal assumed. Calling an audible during a double-down, Regal informed the participants what was going to happen next. Conway and Regal start getting up when, all of sudden, the roles are reversed and Regal and Tajiri start bouncing around for a Conway babyface comeback. Conway threw both guys out of the ring and did the classic Hogan pose.

He had vanquished the foreign heels, who were supposed to be the faces. The crowd were confused. Grabbing the microphone, Regal quipped 'what did you bloody expect? He's the only American in the ring!'.
