15 Stages Of Shawn Michaels & Bret Hart's Infamous Heat

2. Montreal

Once the match was officially announced by mid-October, Bret was in negotiations with WCW. He also met with Shawn, in earshot of Jim Neidhart and Ken Shamrock, and stated he would be willing to drop the belt to Shawn if that's what Vince wanted. Shawn arrogantly responded that he was not willing to do the same, completely disrespecting the champion. Four days later Vince called a meeting with the two and told Shawn that he would be getting the belt back and Shawn did a complete 180. Now crying, Shawn thanked Bret, apologizing for his mouth getting the better of him, but to Bret this was another phoney put-on and knowing he had negotiated creative control, Bret refused to drop the belt to Shawn at Survivor Series in Montreal. The day of the match, the two had a supposed heartfelt conversation in which they cleared the air and settled the heat that had developed over the past year and a half. The two men felt like they had made peace with each other and were in a good place heading into their final match together. That is, until a few hours later when Bret was betrayed. We all know how the match played out and the borderline hatred that Bret would have for Shawn over the next 10+ years. Shawn double-crossed the man he just made peace with on orders from Vince McMahon but denied his involvement for years. Following the match, Shawn promised Bret he wouldn't take the WWF Championship belt out onto RAW the next night, as a sign of his apparent innocence. Shawn did not live up to his promise and the two men would not speak to each other for nearly 15 years.
