12. The Montreal Screwjob
As if this subject hasn't been beaten into the ground enough, Stone Cold decides to probe HBK on what the mindset was going into that night. Shawn says it was uncomfortable, and then reveals that the Wednesday before the show is when the subject of screwing Bret over was first brought up. He says he wasn't grasping the severity of the situation at the time. Michaels says he has no evidence to support his theory but he believes Vince McMahon already had the idea in his mind and was waiting for someone else to bring it up, and Triple H was the first one to speak the idea out loud, saying "If he doesn't want to do business maybe we should do business for him". HBK says he was trapped in the middle and even with all of the differences between he and Bret it wasn't an enviable place to be. There was no more discussion on the issue until the production meeting the Saturday before, and Vince told them he was going to try one last time to talk some sense into Bret but if he didn't agree to terms, he couldn't be allowed to leave that building with the championship. The two of them had a talk before the match that ended with a handshake and he calls it one of the best talks they ever had, and the entire time all he could think about was what was coming. Shawn admits that he himself was the one who suggested the Sharpshooter as the only spot where they'd have the chance to pull the trigger and ring the bell.
