Losing a title by winning a higher ranked one is one of the most contentious ways of losing a championship, as the champion involved never lost it in a match. Instead, it's decided that the champion is unable to fulfil the duties of holding both titles at the same time. The most recent example of this is Paige's succession to Divas Champion, a title she won whilst being NXT's Women's Champion at the same time. After her victory, NXT's General Manager JBL declared that because Paige was Divas Champion, she would no longer be able to fulfil the role of NXT Women's Champion, and subsequently took the title away from her. The Ultimate Warrior also suffered as a result of this phenomena. Warrior won the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania VI from Hulk Hogan, while still being the Intercontinental Champion. While he is officially recognised as holding the WWE & Intercontinental titles simultaneously, Warrior had the IC title removed from his ownership, as rules at the time stipulated that no-one was allowed to hold both of WWE's singles titles at the same time. It might seem unfair, but in terms of storyline it makes sense. The double champion would eventually have to lose one of the titles; which would probably be the lower ranked one (because they've ascended to the main event or top of their division); but losing that title would make them seem unfit and unworthy as the higher champion. Dropping the lower title is better for everyone involved.
