Losing your title without even knowing that you're going to has got to be on of the most unique, unusual and disappointing ways to do it. In 1997, Bret Hart suffered the fate of losing his WWE Championship via the Montreal Screwjob. Bret was leaving WWE for WCW, despite being champion. He had intended to drop the title on Raw, the night immediately after Montreal. Vince wanted the belt to go to Shawn, but Bret refused because of Shawn's behaviour. Bret was also reluctant to lose in Canada, and wanted to leave WWE on a high. Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels and others worried that Bret wouldn't keep his word, and would go to WCW with their most coveted prize. They wanted to avoid another Alundra Blayze like incident, so took the decision, and the championship out of Bret's hands. The Screwjob went ahead, and Bret lost his title without being pinned, submitting, getting disqualified or being beaten in anyway. No matter your stance on Montreal, there's no denying it was an unpleasant way to lose the championship. One year later, the screwjob was reenacted between The Rock & Mankind, again with the WWE title involved. There have been other reenactments since, but the main difference is everyone involved was a willing participant. Despite these subsequent screwjobs, only Bret can claim to have lost his title without knowing that he would; making it one of the most unique and ugly ways to lose a title.
